| The weather for the 9th annual Polar Bear Fly was perfect: it was miserable. Even though the temperature wasn’t as low as desired, the wind countered the high of 51 degrees. When the E-Z UPs were being erected, there was a question about whether either shelter could be secured in the wind. Since the stoves for keeping the chili recipes warm would not stay lit without a shield, at least a single shelter was necessary. One did manage to get set up by putting it directly back of the frequency board to help block some of the wind. In addition to being staked, one leg of the E-Z UP was also strapped to the base of the frequency board for support. Finally, the sides were attached and never stopped their noisy flapping. |

| Once the crew that was getting things in place realized they weren’t going to blow away, they relaxed, knowing the day would go almost as planned. Surprisingly, there were a few daring pilots who flew their airplanes. There was a noticeable difference at this year’s event: outside the shelter, club members congregated and visited at length before and after eating. Perhaps it had something to do with the 45,000 BTU heater situated just outside the shelter. For a complete summary of this Polar Bear Fly, go to the February issue of the club's newsletter. You can compare this event to the First Annual, Second Annual, Third Annual, Fourth Annual, Fifth Annual, Sixth Annual, Seventh Annual, and Eighth Annual Polar Bear Fly. |
