| For the third time since the Polar Bear Fly was started, the weather did not cooperate. It was warm. Folks were in short sleeves, not parkas, by lunch time as the sun appeared. The temperature topped out at 68 degrees, making this New Year’s event the warmest yet. Several in the huge crowd commented on what a lovely day it was. Lots of spectators also were on hand to enjoy the planes and the mild weather. Some members were surprised to see so many planes since the fly-in was limited to electrics. Only flying electrics was the club's compromise in order to get to fly on the weekend. All sizes of electric craft were present, even large pattern planes. There were a few members who had purchased an electric plane for the first time just so they could take part in the event. There was such an abundance of food that another table had to quickly be added. It seemed like flying airplanes was just an excuse to have a picnic and enjoy the company of friends. Three distinctly different chili recipes had been prepared. Some people conducted their personal chili contest by sampling all three. Several delicious homemade desserts were also at the feast. A new tradition was started this year with black-eyed peas being served. This is good because our fliers need all the luck possible in any way they can get it. This wonderful day was saluted with a fly over by Tom Patton in his P-51 Mustang. As he rolled directly over the field, everyone waved and cheered. The 2005 Polar Bear Day was certainly enjoyed by EWMA members and their families. The Park Board’s permitting the club to fly on New Year's Day, a Saturday, turned out to be perfect (even though it didn’t snow). You can compare this event to the First Annual, Second Annual, Third Annual, Fourth Annual, Fifth Annual, Sixth Annual, Seventh Annual, Eighth Annual, and Nineth Annual Polar Bear Fly. |
